Reflecting a period when religious beliefs were still often converted into brick, the Notre-Dame de Lourdes Chapel was built in 1858 just after the visions at Lourdes, and the rapid and popular worship that ensued.

The northern ramparts were favourable to worship since another chapel had been built at the foot of the walls in the 18th century, dedicated to Saint Roch. It was destroyed during the revolution and replaced by a modest niche, but the name Rue Saint-Roch remained.

In any case, the presence of these chapels in the northern ramparts provided a resting place for souls, as well as offering visitors a welcome break to catch their breath during the steep climb to the Ville Haute…
